The Uniqueness of Lasik Surgery

Eyes, though small, are a complex but very vital organs of our body. Eyes act as one of the main bridges between external objects and the brain. We rely mostly on our eyes for judging objects. If we ignore our eyes, it will be a terrible price to pay. Out of the many afflictions that may affect the eyes, refractive errors are quite common. We can get this problem corrected by wearing glasses, contact lenses or through a Lasik surgery.

Lasik is nothing but using a laser beneath a corneal flap so that the cornea can be reshaped. A highly specialized laser is used for treating refractive errors, improving vision and eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses. Development of full-fledged Lasik happened in’91 and is credited to Loannis Pallikaris of Greece. Lasik surgery is a form of refractive surgery to right the eye’s refractive error.

The surgeon uses microkeratome for making a hinged corneal flap. The cornea is reshaped with excimer laser, pulling back the flap. There is a pre-specified pattern for each patient. The pulled flap is repositioned onto the cornea for which no sutures need be done.

Though different varieties of lasers are used in ophthalmology, the one that is used in lasik surgery is a specific one called excimer laser. Many manufacturers make this special laser. There are many types of lasik surgery including conventional type.

In conventional lasik, the surgeon depends on the patient’s glass prescription and hence each patient has a different parameter. Conventional laser comes with the risk of aberrations like glare, halos and night vision, though such cases are rare.

Though rare complications may occur in lasik surgery, if you take into consideration a few factors, you can avoid these complications. You can not undergo lasik surgery, if your employers advise you against it. Further, the history of eye sight must have been a stable one for undergoing lasik surgery. There are some autoimmune diseases like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis due to which your ophthalmologist may advise you against lasik surgery.

If you live in Northern California look for Lasik Eye Surgery in Oakland CA if you happen to live in the area. Your eye care doctor should be a choice you don’t take lightly.
