One-Day or Disposable: Contacts

December 12th, 2009 | Categories: Health | Tags:

It’s right that there is a stigma attached to disposable contacts. People reckon they are somehow wasteful or irresponsible. This is why the industry opted to use the “one-day” moniker for disposables. The word “disposable” once conjured images of convenience and forward-thinking industry. Now, unfortunately, it conjures images of waste, landfills, and Al Gore. The key to remember is that nearly everything is disposable now.

Instead of calling them “disposable” contacts, the powers that be should have opted to call them “thin” contacts. They are considerable thinner than their conventional counterparts. To be sure, this thinness is what makes them so comfortable and, ultimately, disposable. You cannot effectively clean them as they will tear. Instead, you can only wear them once or twice, and then dispose of them.

Cost is king in the contact world. Some consumers are turned off by the price of a six-month supply of disposable contact lenses. Though disposable contacts are more expensive, that cost is offset by the fact that no cleaning solutions or enzymatic cleaners are necessary. They are disposable and are not meant to be worn more than one day. They require no maintenance or storage. This is a very attractive aspect of disposable lenses: their convenience.

You can set yourself free from the cleaning tyranny. Say goodbye to the tedious, nightly cleaning ritual. An inherent and obvious advantage of disposable contacts is the fact their thinness allows them to be worn overnight. As they will be disposed of, there is small to no dread of inciting an eye infection. The protein buildup is inconsequential as the lenses are destined for the trash bin.

Disposable lenses are more comfortable and require far less maintenance than conventional lenses. There is no need to clean or care for the lenses as they are only meant to be worn once. In the long term, they are more cost effective, comfortable, and leave a smaller carbon footprint to manufacture.

The beauty of disposable contacts is their comfort. Forget the price point and remember you’ll be saving by not having to pay for cleaning supplies.
